Den Unterschied zwischen der AHL und der ICE sieht Robertson darin, dass es in der AHL keine Nationalitätsbeschränkung gibt und dort die bestmöglichen verfügbaren Spieler in ihren Teams auflaufen. Auch ist es die Liga, in der ein jeder Spieler den Sprung in die NHL schaffen will. Es sind viele junge Spieler im Einsatz, Geschwindigkeit und die Intensität sind sehr hoch.

Ring Sports wollte vom Verteidiger wissen, ob es auch ICE-interne Angebote gab, diese Frage wurde aber vom Kanadier mit einem Lächeln abgewandt und somit scheint es doch das ein oder andere Angebot nach dieser starken Saison gegeben zu haben.
Abenteuer Pardubice – Extraliga
Dennis Robertson freut sich bereits total auf das neue Abenteuer Tschechien. Von der Liga hat er nur gutes gehört und er erwartet ein physischeres Spiel in der Extraliga. Ausserdem sieht das Kämpferherz dort auch die Möglichkeit, sich für noch bessere Teams und bessere Ligen in Europa zu empfehlen. Ex-Graz Stürmer Anthony Camara kennt er bereits aus einer gemeinsamen Zeit bei den Charlotte Checkers und das ermöglicht ihm natürlich einen “leichteren” Einstieg in Pardubice.
Special Teams und Coach Ireland
Das Powerplay funktionierte über die Saison gesehen sehr gut und auch das Penalty Killing sieht Robertson nicht als ganz so schlecht an wie es die Statistik (letzter der Liga) zeigt. Der Hauptgrund dafür ist eher die Undiszipliniertheit und die vielen genommenen Strafen. Andere Teams konnten sich in der finalen Phase noch steigern und der HCB hat das eben nicht geschafft und das schmerzte im Finale. Der Stil von Coach Greg Ireland ist definitiv nicht für jeden Spieler geeignet, er ist ein Coach der “alten Schule”. Robertson gegenüber sei er aber immer fair und respektvoll gewesen.
Fans wurden vermisst
In seiner ersten Saison in Südtirol hat Robertson es genossen vor den Fans zu spielen – heuer wurden diese sehr vermisst. Für das kommende Jahr wünscht er ihnen den Meistertitel.
Wien, Loney und Lebler
Die Spiele gegen die Vienna Capitals waren für Robertson auf die Saison gesehen die Härtesten. Die Wiener spielten sehr physisch und teilten stets Checks aus. Auch die Playoffserie hat seine Mannschaft sehr zermürbt und es gab ständig Verletzungen. In seinen 2 Jahren in der Liga waren Ty Loney und Brian Lebler die härtesten Gegenspieler für Robertson. Er hofft für diese beiden, dass sie in Zukunft auch bezahlt werden was sie wert sind.
Stolz auf den Ring Sports Award
Für Dennis Robertson ist es eine große Anerkennung zum besten Verteidiger gewählt worden zu sein. Er sieht in der ICE eine Menge guter Verteidiger, auch Spieler die schon lange hier sind und die auch wirklich stark sind. Er wird immer gerne auf seine Zeit in der EBEL/Icehl zurückblicken.

How do you see the difference between AHL and ICEHL?
I think there is a difference in the age, speed and depth of the league. The AHL is very young, fast, and intense. Everyone is trying to make the jump to the NHL which makes it very competitive. Also there are no limiting rules on nationality, teams take the best players possible which increases the competition in the AHL.
Were there any league offers after this strong season? If yes, from whom?
With all the drama in the league about poaching and players moving, I think I’ll avoid this question.
What do you expect from the Czech league?
I’m excited about moving to the Extraliga, it’s going to be a fun challenge. The Czech Republic has always been a hockey hotbed and constantly turns out NHL level talent, so I’m ready to rise to the competition. I’ve heard it’s a very good league, players are bigger and more physical as well as more skilled, it will be a change of pace for sure.
What role did you have with Bolzano?
I would say my role was to contribute to all aspects of the game in Bozen. I definitely got more of an opportunity to be offensive and run one of the PP units in my second year, after earning the trust of the coaching staff. I also tried to lead by example and set the tone through work, that has always been a part of my game and will continue to be my strongest attribute.
With Anthony Camara and you there are currently only 2 players from overseas in the squad of Pardubice – do you already know one of your new teammates?
I actually played with Anthony in Charlotte for a couple of months in the AHL. I spoke to him about Pardubice and he really enjoyed the team and city. That will make the beginning of the year easier to adjust to.
What was the reason for your transfer to Pardubice?
The biggest reason was opportunity. Playing in the Extraliga will be a challenge as well as a chance to continue to play for better teams and better leagues in Europe.
From your point of view, why did the special teams never work so well during the whole season? Especially with the mass of good players.
I would say that they did work pretty well throughout the year. Our powerplay was quite good throughout the season, especially our top unit. Our penalty kill struggled at times but that was more to do with the volume of penalties taken, not the quality of the players/tactics. Once your killers are exhausted it does not matter who is out on the ice. We needed to be more disciplined and that ended up hurting us quite a bit. In the playoffs we needed to elevate our special teams for both PP and PK, other teams stepped their play up and we didn’t match that increase. It hurt us in the finals.
Captain Bernard recently said in an interview that not all players wanted to play under coach Ireland. How was it with you?
He was good with me, always treated me with respect and fairly. He has a little bit more of an old school mentality about the game and he pushed some players very hard. His style is definitely not for everyone.
Do you still have something to say to the fans in Bolzano?
We definitely missed them in the arena this season, I truly enjoyed playing in front of them my first year and I hope they get the championship they deserve next season!
Which opponent from the ICEHL will you miss the least – which was your toughest opponent?
Vienna was very tough to play against, they are a team that checked tightly and played very physically, that series wore us down a lot, we had several players injured during those 6 games.
Individually Loney and Lebler were by far the hardest players to play against in the league through both years, just dominant players and I hope they both are getting paid what they are worth.
You won the Ring Sports Award “Best Defenseman of the Season” and were voted No. 1 by a 14-member jury of experts and the fans – does that honor you?
That definitely is a huge honor to be voted to win this award! There are many great defenders in the league, guys who have been here a long time and are very skilled players, I truly appreciate it and will always enjoy looking back on my time in the EBEL/ICE League.
